Honeywell and AliphaJet Commit to Commercialize

Renewable Drop-in Jet Biofuels at a Dinner Hosted By Former President Jimmy Carter

Honeywell to Invest in AliphaJet's Pilot and Commercial Programs

San Francisco, CA - (Business Wire, November 30, 2011) - At a dinner hosted by President Jimmy Carter with Jack Oswald, CEO of AliphaJet Inc. (www.AliphaJet.com), and Tracey Haslam, Americas vice president, Honeywell Process Solutions (NYSE:HON, www.honeywellprocess.com), the former President endorsed the collaboration of large and small business to commercialize renewable drop-in biofuels.

"I am optimistic about the future of renewable fuels now that breakthrough technologies available from Honeywell and AliphaJet promise to unlock the use of renewable drop-in fuels", said President Carter (www.cartercenter.org). "Efforts like these fulfill the energy policies we launched in the 1970s".

Honeywell will invest engineering services and equipment to accelerate the deployment of AliphaJet's process. AliphaJet will use Honeywell Controls, Instrumentation and Advanced Solutions, including its Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS) and UniSim® process simulators and field instrumentation.

"AliphaJet's ability to produce drop-in jet fuel on a small and widely distributed basis is the perfect complement to our own in-house technologies", said Tracey Haslam, Americas vice president, Honeywell Process Solutions.

"We are very happy that Honeywell has joined our team and is investing in the commercialization of this technology," said Jack Oswald, CEO of AliphaJet. "Honeywell's vote of confidence aligns AliphaJet's and Honeywell's technologies in the lead position in this emerging field."

AliphaJet has developed and demonstrated a highly cost-effective catalytic method for making jet biofuel from renewable products such as plant and animal triglycerides and/or fatty acids. Unlike other smaller scale technologies, the AliphaJet process removes all of the oxygen from the renewable oils without the need for massive amounts of expensive hydrogen gas or co-location at a traditional oil refinery.   The AliphaJet process offers significant CAPEX and OPEX advantages including those obtained by deploying processing plants close to the feedstock sources.

The AliphaJet process can also produce renewable drop-in diesel fuel, gasoline and other hydrocarbon molecules usually derived from fossil fuel oil.

The AliphaJet process can use a variety of renewable oil feedstocks obtained from plants, animal processing or emerging oil production methods such as algae and genetically modified organisms: seeds/vegetables (camelina, pennycress, palm, soy, corn), animal fats (beef, chicken), algae (Sapphire, Solazyme), GMO (Amyris, LS9, Genomatica).

"A couple of interesting trends in the selector voting this year. First, we note that the selectors are getting seriously behind drop-in fuels, handing five of the top 6 slots to drop-in fuels developers.

We also noted that a couple of companies did markedly better in selector voting. Enerkem, Virent, Joule, Dynamic Fuels, Bluefire Renewables, SG Biofuels, Fulcrum Bioenergy, KiOR, KL Energy, Inbicon, SynGest, AE Biofuels, Solix and Praj. That's a wide mix of companies - cellulosic ethanol, microbial fermentation, pyrolysis, feedstock companies, systems developers, algae."

SynGest Inc.

SYNGEST'S BIOAMMONIA PROJECT COMPLETES AWARD CONTRACT WITH IOWA POWER FUND AND IOWA OFFICE OF ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

Mini plant will make 150 TPD of nitrogen fertilizer from biomass

San Francisco, CA - (Business Wire) December 13, 2010 - SynGest Inc. announced that the Iowa Power Fund and Iowa Office of Energy Independence have approved an award contract in the amount of $2.5 million for the design and engineering stage of a biomass ammonia facility to be built and operated in Iowa.  One requirement of the contract is evidence that SynGest has raised an additional $3.5 million in new cash equity "The Iowa Power Fund board's intent to support the SynGest project will greatly help to accelerate our efforts to bring this critical technology to market," says Jack Oswald, Chief Executive Officer of SynGest.  "This is a major milestone and an important step forward tor SynGest," adds Oswald.

According to Oswald, of all the biofuels and bioproducts that are currently under consideration, "nitrogen fertilizer represents the most highly leveraged opportunity.  That's because the United States imports more than 60% of the fertilizer used in the country".   Unlike conventional ammonia production methods, the SynGest process does not use any fossil fuel energy.  SynGest's Iowa plant will be the first better-than-100% "green" environmental project of its kind in the world, and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 150%.   As world population increases from 6 billion to 9 billion inhabitants, the need for fossil-fuel-free fertilizer will be critical.  Without this vital commodity, the yield of corn, wheat, rice and other food grains would fall by 50%.

"Even a 20% shortfall in the foreign ammonia supply chain, whether it's accidental or deliberate, will cause serious problems in our food industry and related financial markets," warns Oswald.  "Our SynGest biomass-to-ammonia mini-plant business model will help to mitigate this risk.  We will empower farmers, and make them impervious to external energy forces, while converting agricultural waste into fuel to power the farm and nitrogen fertilizer to replenish the soil."

The bioammonia plant being designed under this project is estimated to eventually create 360 skilled constructions jobs and 40 full-time direct employees.  Purchasing, handling and transportation of the biomass and sales of ammonia, and ancillary support services could generate up to an additional $10 million of new income to the nearby communities.  The plant under design would use 130,000 tons of biomass per year to manufacture 50,000 tons of BioAmmonia annually, enough to fertilize 500,000 acres of nearby Iowa farmland under corn.

I urge you call to read this brief article.  They advocate a similar approach to what I published in “Clean Energy 2.0: Energy Abundance or Bust”.  We do not need to wait for “breakththroughs”.  We have much of the technology that we need to make huge progress very quickly toward a clean energy world.  Its not that we should stop innovating, but it appears to many of us that government funding is only interested in funding either (a) new research or (b) tired old ideas (i.e. cellulosic ethanol).  What we need more of is something in between AND Comprehensive Clean Energy Legislation that puts a price on GHG (i.e. carbon) emissions.

Please spread this message throughout the administration, especially Sec Chu, and on Capitol Hill.
